Day #3: When something becomes everything

It’s been one heck of a day.

I staffed the office alone while my colleagues took the day off. Because it was the Monday before the July 4 holiday, I anticipated a quiet, uneventful work day.

How wrong I was. The office was hopping pretty much from the moment I unlocked the door and flipped on the lights.

That made the time go quickly, so I’m not complaining. But I came home dead tired. I still had to feed the dogs and take them outside, cook something for dinner, wash the dishes, and then come up with something to write for the third day of my blogging challenge.

And me being me, the overachiever, i told myself it had to be a sizable piece, something to wow the audience, maybe even the best thing I’ve ever written!

I mentioned this to my wise daughter, who always has a way of putting things in perspective. “If you only have 10 percent left for writing, and if you give 10 percent, then you’ve given 100 percent of what you have,” she said.

My wise daughter Ainsley, on the left, and I at the Flat River in Lowell.

“Even if it’s short. Even if you think it’s pointless,” she continued. “Writing always has a point, for our brain and heart. It’s the doing, the dedication to ourselves, that’s important, Doing keeps our commitment to our writing and to the process.”

Ten percent might be a generous estimate of what I had left for writing at the end of my day. But I gave 100 percent, and here it is.

  1. These are the wisest words I’ve heard in a long while. Ainsley is absolutely right, and Karen – you truly brighten my day with your words and your unique perspective!
