Day #8: Starting week 2

Nothing like a little procrastination on a rainy Saturday, which also included an afternoon nap. I had all day to write. Now it’s evening.

A good friend noted that, as of yesterday, I’ve written for one week straight. That’s an accomplishment for me and one I feel good about!

Today I’m feeling the resistance.

If it weren’t for this self-imposed blogging challenge, I would not be writing today. This might be the first time I’ve paid attention enough to notice the push/pull in myself. I want to write, and I don’t. It’s not even a matter of waiting for inspiration or the Muse, I just don’t want to today.

My favorite writer, Annie Lamott, offers these two pieces of advice. “Keep your butt in the chair. Butt in chair. Get that tattooed on your left arm, butt in chair.” And “Start where you are.”

It’s doing the work that gets you there. There’s no magic about it. So that’s what I’m doing. Writing these words, after reprimanding the dog for chewing on something she’s not supposed to. Mostly because she’s bored.

Because we haven’t gone for our walk today.

Because I didn’t feel like it.

But I wrote. 1 out of 2 ain’t bad, I guess.

One last quote from Annie: “No one cares if you write, no one is going to get you to do it, so you better.”

For more from Anne Lamott, here’s an interview by her son Sam on his podcast.

And this from a TED Talk she did.
