‘Enthousiasmos’

Day 27

Our creativity book group continues to discuss A Whack on the Side of the Head by Roger von Oech.

It’s considered a classic in “stimulating creativity and innovation.” The back of the book says it’s one of the publisher’s business titles, which is unfortunate, because it’s so much more.

One woman tells von Oech her company hires people who have playfulness and intensity among their characteristics. “When people have these two traits,” she says, “they’re enthusiastic and these are the ones who generate new ideas.”

Then von Oech points out that the Greek word for enthusiasm, enthousiasmos, means “the God within you” (page 112).

“Enthusiastic people seem to have access to a spirit that serves as their source of inspiration,” he says.

I love that! What better model, and source, for creativity than the Divine?
